Child Asthma Action Plan

๐Ÿ“‹ How to use: Review the zones below to determine your child's current status.
โš ๏ธ For clinical decision support only. Always apply professional judgment.
๐ŸŸข GREEN ZONE โ€” Doing Well
Signs: No cough, wheeze, or shortness of breath. Child can play, run, sleep normally.
โœ… Action:
โ€ข Continue daily controller medication as prescribed (e.g., inhaled corticosteroid).
โ€ข Avoid known triggers (dust, smoke, pets, cold air).
โ€ข Review with doctor at next scheduled appointment.
๐ŸŸก YELLOW ZONE โ€” Caution
Signs: Coughing, mild wheeze, chest tightness. Waking at night with breathing difficulty. Using reliever more than twice this week.
โš ๏ธ Action:
โ€ข Give Salbutamol inhaler (Ventolin): 2โ€“4 puffs via spacer every 4 hours as needed.
โ€ข If response is good, continue every 4 hours for 24โ€“48 hours.
โ€ข Continue controller medication.
โ€ข Call your doctor if symptoms are not improving within 24 hours.
โ€ข If a second set of puffs is needed within 3โ€“4 hours, call doctor immediately.
๐Ÿ”ด RED ZONE โ€” Emergency
Signs: Severe breathing difficulty, cannot speak in full sentences. Lips or fingernails turning bluish/grey. Reliever inhaler not providing relief.
๐Ÿšจ Immediate Action:
โ€ข Give reliever inhaler (salbutamol) 6โ€“10 puffs via spacer immediately.
โ€ข Call 112 or go to the nearest Emergency Department immediately.
โ€ข Do NOT leave the child alone. Keep the child sitting upright.
โ€ข Repeat 6โ€“10 puffs every 20 minutes while waiting for help.
โ€ข Take the written action plan and medication list to hospital.
